Cheap Broadband with Landline

MTNL is offering one of the Cheapest (Low cost) broadband plans with a landline at Rs.398/- per month in Delhi with 25 Gb Fair Usage Limit at 2Mbps (up to 8Mbps), Unlimited Local calls to any network. This is way better than MTNL's normal lowest 699 plan and Airtel's 899 plan. This offer is available permanently now.

Airtel has a low cost broadband Rs.599/- Retention plan which allows 50 Gb of data at 8Mbps after which speed drops to 1Mbps. This also has unlimited calls to any network like in the 899 plan. Call Airtel Customer care to switch to this plan to save on your monthly bill. It is NOT mentioned on their website nor do they advertise this.

Here is a Comprehensive Step by step guide to setup MediaWiki site locally on a web server We could not find any comprehensive guide for MediaWiki install on the internet so we prepared this document. The steps below are for WampServer on a Windows machine but should work for any other platform like Linux/Unix:

  1. Download and install WampServer.

  2. Download and Unzip the latest version of MediaWiki gz file in a directory like "wiki" on the Web server (MediaWiki 1.19.1 is what we used). Installed on Apache using WampServer. You can use 7-zip to unzip gz files.

  3. Go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin. Create a Database wikidb with collation utf8_general_ci.
    Create a user wikiusr with localhost permission and password of your choice.

  4. Go to http://localhost/wiki. You will get a message that "localhost.php not found" and a link to "Please setup wiki". Click to initiate Setup.

Actual Setup (Install):

  • Your Language - en, Wiki Language - en
  • Environment Checks, if it says ok to install, then "Continue"
  • Connect to database
    => Database type: MySQL, Database host: localhost
  • Identify this wiki
    => Database name: wikidb, Database table prefix: wiki_
  • User account for installation
    => Database username: wikiusr, Database Password: <your password>
  • Database settings
    => Database account for web access: Use the same account as for installation: Tick, Storage engine: InnoDB, Database character set: UTF-8
  • Name
    => Name of wiki: <My Knowledge Base>, Project namespace: Same as the wiki name: <My_Knowledge_Base>
  • Administrator account
    => Your name: admin, Password: <Your password>, E-mail address: <Your Email Id>
  • Options
    => User rights profile:  Authorized editors only, Copyright and license:  No license footer
  • E-mail settings
    => Enable outbound e-mail, Return e-mail address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • Enable user-to-user e-mail: Tick, Enable, e-mail authentication help : Tick
  • Extensions
    => None Ticked
  • Images and file upload
    => Enable file uploads: UnTicked, Logo URL: /wiki/skins/common/images/wiki.png, Enable Instant Commons : Not Ticked
  • Advanced configuration
    => Settings for object caching: No caching
  • Install
    => Continue

    Setting up database... done
    Creating tables... done

    Populating default interwiki table... done
    Initializing statistics... done

=> Download LocalSettings.php

  • The installer generates a LocalSettings.php file. It contains all your configuration.
  • Download this file and put it in the base of your wiki installation (the same directory as index.php). The download of this file should start automatically.
  • Copy the LocalSettings.php into Wiki home directory on the web server.

This completes the installation and setup. Now you can change the logo and start adding pages.
